Fit Family Lifestyles Month: Even on the Road!

1/22/2014

As a mother to three busy kids, staying active isn't just a good idea, it's mandatory. That's why my motto, look good - feel great, is a way of life that's especially relevant to Fit Family Lifestyles Month!  However, for many of us, staying fit and active is easier at home than on the road.  So, I complied a few of my personal ways that I stay healthy while vacationing with my family and I hope these tips and tricks will help you even when you're away from home too!

Prepare

In the weeks before vacation, I try to eat healthy and keep up on workouts.  No one wants to count calories on vacation, but we don't want to lug home unneeded pounds either.  Paying attention to food and exercise before departure allows some freedom for fun while away.

Snacks and More Snacks

Plan ahead and pack easy-to-eat snacks like pretzels, string cheese, sliced fruits, trail mix, peanuts and dried fruit.  Toss in some dark chocolate M&M's for sweet-tooth cravings, and granola bars to replace candy bars.  I find that by giving my kids sweets in moderation throughout the day, it saves on the binge cravings later on!

Sneaks

Leave a pair of high heels behind and make room for sneakers.  Morning suns and walks on the beach, no matter where your family is staying, can help keep you active even away from home.  You can still pack for dinners and poolside leisure, but sneakers will help you maintain your workout routine.

Take Home with You

Being away from home with a baby or small children can stress sleep schedules.  TO make them more comfortable, make the hotel feel like home.  Consider taking your child's sheets, special blanket, sleep sack, swaddlers, pacifiers, noise machines and books.  Anything you can do to make them feel more at home away from home will make sleep time less stressful.

Plan, Prepare

Map your course.  Know where the best hiking trails are located, what theme parks are available and other activities to help keep you and the kids active and entertained.  You'll both get your exercise, and they'll never know it.  As for me, Disney World awaits.  Miles in the hot Florida sun will provide workouts without the work.

I'm thrilled to be celebrating Fit Family Lifestyles Month, and I hope these tips spark some ideas to keep you and your family healthy and active away from home.  Once we're back, the routine awaits - healthy lunches, outdoor winter fun and sports.  What are you doing to celebrate?

  1. 1) It's not so hot under the Florida sun right now lol and 2) My husband and I have a no tram policy at Disney. We walk the parking lot---even when we are in the last row at Magic Kingdom and we have been walking all day. I train hard leading up to the trip because I want to be able to keep up :)
