Inked in Love

8/08/2014

If you are a reader of mine you've probably read and know that my husband and I were married in Las Vegas almost three years ago.  Vegas holds an extremely special place in our hearts...it's where one of the best days of our lives occurred.

We've spent the past three years trying to think of a way to ink our love on our skin.  Hubby and I are both decently tattooed folks and we knew we wanted to not just flaunt our rings but a piece of art to show our love for each other.  We've gone back and forth over all sorts of tattoos that would be acceptable but had yet to find anything we loved.

There was the ring tattoo.  We could have done our wedding date, initials, "til' death" or a number of other options.  But when we went to do it we found out we would have to touch them up at least yearly due to the thin skin and honestly about 10 other couples around us got them too.  It just didn't seem unique and special to our marriage.  So we kicked the ring tattoo to the waste basket.  We both looked through Pinterest and all sorts of marriage tattoo sites for ideas but nothing seemed to be exactly what we wanted.  Then one day it happened.

Hubby was a genius!  We got married in Vegas...why not do something Vegas themed?  It was brilliant and we found all sorts of inspiration that we could put our own spin on.  The first of those spins was the actual "Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas" sign.  This sign is infamous in Vegas and a must see if you go, so we knew it had to be apart of our tattoo.  Hubby realized that with the exact same amount of letter we could change the WELCOME TO to MARRIED IN!  We were thrilled.  Now we just needed an artist who could help bring it to life.  Enter Brad at Human Canvas Tattoos in Fredericksburg, VA.

Brad was awesome and worked with us both to get the tattoo we wanted.  Hubby prefers I sit and be on his left (don't ask me why) but he wanted his tat on his left forearm and mine on my right forearm.  This way when we held hands our tattoos were intertwined (insert "awwww" here).  I had a small tattoo on my inner right wrist to cover so I knew these would become big pieces, half-sleeves even.  Brad recommended roses, three of them to help cover my current tat.   I went with red since that was our wedding color.  Hubby's wouldn't have flowers.  His tattoo would end up being more masculine and mine more feminine which was perfectly fine with us.  The ideas would be cohesive but not exact.

In addition to the Vegas sign and roses we added in poker chips and playing cards.  All things Vegas and gambling, right?  The playing cards we went with were the King & Queen of Hearts.  It just seemed to fit.  The poker chips are colors of green, pink and yellow.  To off-set my red roses hubby got some red dice on his tattoo.  Again, cohesive but not exact.

This is the place we are right now with our tattoos.  Hubby has another session in a couple weeks and I'm on stand by until after the baby is born.  I can't wait to watch these pieces of art representing our marriage and where we got married become ink on our skin expressing that outward.  We are working on sketches for slot art and some font for our wedding date.  I'm sure these tattoos will be ever changing and growing with more added as time goes on but for no we love the starting point and can't wait to watch them form as we constantly remember to celebrate our wedding day and fabulous Las Vegas!

  1. WOW!! We were also married in Las Vegas, we managed to go back for our 5 and 10 year and we will go back for our 20 in a couple years. And typing that out makes me feel really old. I have wanted a ring tattoo for years but never knew what I wanted so still don't have one.
Great way to celebrate your love, love the color in these, perfect.

  4. Love it! I'm not sure I am brave enough to attempt a sleeve but I am in love with your concept and the unity of the two tattoos... my Hubby is so NOT the tattoo fan that I am. He only has 2 and is happy right there. I just got a bit of new ink for my Birthday and I am already thinking of my next one...he made me promise not to end up the old lady with sagging tattoos so I have to choose my placement stratigically...LOL :D

    1. When I'm 80 I won't care about my saggy tattoos...I'll be too concerned with spending my time with loved ones so it doesn't matter where they go! As long as they look good for the next 30+ years :)
